Grahan Dosha
Grāhaṇa Dosha
Grahan Dosha (Eclipse Dosha) is formed when the Sun or Moon is conjunct Rahu or Ketu in the natal chart, mimicking the astronomical condition of a solar or lunar eclipse at the time of birth. It afflicts the significations of the eclipsed luminary.
Overview
The Sanskrit word "Grahan" means "eclipse" or "seizing." In astronomy, eclipses occur when the Sun or Moon is near the Rahu–Ketu axis — Rahu and Ketu are the mathematical points where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic, creating the conditions for eclipses. A native born during or near an eclipse, or with the luminaries near these nodes natally, carries this energy signature. The two forms of Grahan Dosha have different effects: - **Surya Grahan Dosha** (Sun + Rahu/Ketu): Affects self-identity, authority, father, soul expression, and career. - **Chandra Grahan Dosha** (Moon + Rahu/Ketu): Affects the mind, emotions, mother, nourishment, and public image. The eclipse of a luminary does not simply weaken it — it intensifies and distorts. A Surya Grahan native may have an outsized need for recognition that paradoxically makes recognition harder to accept. A Chandra Grahan native may have extraordinary emotional depth that oscillates between insight and confusion.
How It Forms
Sun or Moon within approximately 15° of Rahu or Ketu in the natal chart constitutes Grahan Dosha. The closer the orb, the more intense the affliction. If the birth occurred on an actual eclipse date (solar or lunar), the effect is considered strongest. The house where the eclipse falls determines the primary area of life affected.
Common Symptoms
- For Surya Grahan: difficulty with authority figures, father, or self-expression; identity confusion
- For Chandra Grahan: emotional instability, troubled relationship with mother, sleep disturbances
- Both: disturbing dreams, particularly near eclipse dates in transit
- Both: karmic themes from past lives surfacing in current relationships
- Health issues in the body parts signified by the eclipsed luminary
- Feeling of purpose being obscured or not fully expressed in the world

Cancellation Rules (Parihara Yoga)
- ✓Jupiter aspecting the eclipsed luminary significantly protects and restores its qualities
- ✓The Sun in own sign (Simha) or exaltation (Mesha) with Rahu — the Sun's natural strength resists the eclipse
- ✓The Moon in own sign (Kataka) or exaltation (Vrishabha) with Ketu — reduces severity of Chandra Grahan
- ✓If Rahu or Ketu is in a friendly sign relative to the luminary — the eclipse effect is moderated
- ✓A strong lagna lord providing protection to the house where the eclipse occurs
- ✓Regular performance of solar and lunar eclipse remedies throughout life
Frequently Asked Questions
Is being born on an eclipse date especially significant?
Yes — birth on an actual eclipse date (when Sun or Moon is within 1–2° of Rahu or Ketu) creates the most intense form of Grahan Dosha. The astronomical event and the natal imprint coincide. However, even births days before or after an eclipse, or with luminaries near the nodes without an actual astronomical eclipse, carry the pattern at varying intensities.
Are Grahan Dosha effects always negative?
No. The eclipse quality can produce extraordinary depth and perception. Rahu with the Moon can create psychic sensitivity and powerful emotional intuition. Ketu with the Sun can produce deep spiritual humility and disinterest in ego validation — qualities of the genuine renunciant. The "dosha" aspect is the difficulty; the other side is remarkable potential.
How does Grahan Dosha differ from Rahu–Ketu aspects generally?
Rahu and Ketu aspect everything in the chart through their 5th and 9th aspects. Grahan Dosha specifically involves the luminaries (Sun and Moon) — the most personal, self-defining planets in the chart. When the lights of the chart are eclipsed, the most fundamental experience of self (Sun) and mind (Moon) is affected, which is why Grahan Dosha is considered more personally significant than generic Rahu–Ketu aspects on other planets.
Can Grahan Dosha affect children born to a parent with this dosha?
Classical Jyotisha does not directly teach genetic transmission of doshas — each person's chart is their own karmic signature. However, ancestral karma (Pitru Dosha) can manifest as recurring patterns across generations. A parent with Surya Grahan who has not resolved their relationship with their own father may unconsciously create similar father-child dynamics, but this is psychological and karmic, not astrological inheritance.
