Kaal Sarp Dosha
Kālasarpa Dosha
Kaal Sarp Dosha is formed when all seven classical planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn) fall between Rahu and Ketu in the natal chart, with none outside this axis. The result is a hemmed chart that intensifies the themes of the Rahu–Ketu axis.
Overview
Kaal Sarp Dosha is one of the most discussed and also most misunderstood doshas in popular Jyotisha. The term does not appear in the classical texts (BPHS, Brihat Jataka, Saravali) — it is a later addition to Jyotisha literature, likely medieval or post-medieval. Despite this, it has become an important diagnostic in contemporary practice. The dosha's effect depends heavily on which Rahu–Ketu axis is involved (there are 12 types, named after the naga serpents), which houses Rahu and Ketu occupy, and the strength of the planets hemmed inside. A person with a strong Jupiter or a well-placed lagna lord within the hemmed axis can thrive significantly despite the Kaal Sarp pattern.
How It Forms
All planets from Sun to Saturn must be on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis (i.e., between Rahu and Ketu going in the direction of Rahu's motion). If even one planet falls outside this hemming (on the Ketu side), the dosha is considered absent or partial. The 12 types are named after serpents: Anant, Kulika, Vasuki, Shankhpal, Padma, Mahapadma, Takshak, Karkotak, Shankhchur, Ghatak, Vishadhar, Sheshnaag.

- ✓If the lagna lord is strong and outside the hemming axis — reduces severity
- ✓If all hemmed planets are in their exaltation, own sign, or moolatrikona — greatly reduces the dosha's negative expression
- ✓Partial Kaal Sarp (one planet outside the axis) — effects are reduced proportionally
- ✓A strong Jupiter in the chart is the most effective natural mitigation for Kaal Sarp themes
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kaal Sarp Dosha mentioned in classical Vedic texts?
No — the term and concept do not appear in the major classical texts (BPHS, Brihat Jataka, Phaladeepika). It is a later addition to Jyotisha literature, possibly from the medieval period. Despite this, it is widely used in contemporary practice and cannot be dismissed, as many practitioners report consistent results from its assessment and remediation.
Does Kaal Sarp Dosha mean the person will fail in life?
Absolutely not. Many historically significant figures — leaders, artists, spiritual masters — have had this pattern. The dosha intensifies the Rahu–Ketu axis themes, which means the person often has a powerful, unusual life trajectory. The obstacles it creates often lead to deeper transformation and achievement.
What are the 12 types of Kaal Sarp Dosha?
The 12 types are named after the naga serpents based on Rahu's house position: Anant (1st), Kulika (2nd), Vasuki (3rd), Shankhpal (4th), Padma (5th), Mahapadma (6th), Takshak (7th), Karkotak (8th), Shankhchur (9th), Ghatak (10th), Vishadhar (11th), and Sheshnaag (12th). The house position of Rahu determines the primary life area most intensely activated.
