Planetary Strength

Avasthas — Planetary State & Condition Analysis

Avasthas (states) describe how each planet experiences its placement — three systems from BPHS: Jagradadi (consciousness level), Deeptadi (luminosity), and Lajjitadi (emotional condition). Together they reveal the planet's functional quality beyond mere dignity.

The Three Avastha Systems

😴

Jagradadi Avastha

Three states of consciousness: Jagrata (awake) in own sign or friend/exaltation, Swapna (dreaming) in neutral sign, Sushupti (deep sleep) in enemy sign or debilitation. An asleep planet struggles to deliver its results even when otherwise well-placed.

Deeptadi Avastha

Eight luminosity states from BPHS: Deepta (brilliant, exalted), Swastha (healthy, own/MT sign), Mudita (happy, friend sign) through Vikala (distressed, combust) and Kshobhita (agitated, combust). Each modifies outcome quality.

😤

Lajjitadi Avastha

Six emotional states: Lajjita (ashamed, with malefics in 5H), Garvita (proud, in exaltation/MT/own), Kshudita (hungry, in enemy sign or with Saturn), Trshita (thirsty, in water signs with malefic aspect), Mudita (pleased), Kshobhita (agitated).

Composite Picture

A planet might be Jagrata + Deepta + Garvita (fully effective and proud) or Sushupti + Vikala + Lajjita (sleeping, distressed, and ashamed). The three avastha layers together define the planet's functional quality more precisely than dignity alone.

Common Questions

What happens when Jupiter relieves a Kshudita planet?

Classical texts state that Kshudita (hunger — planet in enemy sign or conjunct Saturn) is relieved when Jupiter occupies the same sign or aspects it. The Kshudita condition is cancelled; the planet instead gains a form of Mudita (Jupiter's supportive presence). AstroShri applies this relief rule per BPHS Ch.45.

How does Garvita (pride) affect a planet's output?

Garvita applies when a planet is in exaltation, Moolatrikona, or own sign. It means the planet "stands tall" and delivers its results with confidence — not just technically dignified but experientially empowered. Garvita is one of the clearest positive Lajjitadi states.

Is Kshobhita (agitated) the same as combust?

Kshobhita in Deeptadi Avastha fires specifically for combust planets (within orb of the Sun). In Lajjitadi, Kshobhita has a broader trigger — it fires when a planet is in enemy sign with a specific malefic configuration. AstroShri applies each definition correctly per its source table in BPHS Ch.45.
