Each of the 27 nakshatras has 4 padas (quarters), and each pada corresponds to a specific syllable. The child's birth nakshatra and the pada (determined by the Moon's exact degree at birth) together give the traditional first syllable (Namaakshara) of the child's name.

While the traditional rule is day 11 or 12, in practice families choose a convenient auspicious date within the first few months. The key is finding a date with a good nakshatra and tithi, ideally confirmed against the child's Janma Kundali.
