What is a Birth Chart?
A birth chart (Janma Kundali) is a snapshot of the sky at your exact birth moment, cast for your exact location. It has three layers — each answering a different question.
Lagna · लग्न
The Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. It changes every two hours and determines your entire house system. In Jyotish, it matters more than your Sun sign — it shapes your body, temperament, and the lens through which you experience all other planetary energies.

Vimshottari Dasha — the most widely used system — runs for 120 years and cycles through nine planetary rulers. Each planet rules a major period (Mahadasha) of fixed length. The Moon's position in a specific Nakshatra at your birth determines where in the cycle you begin.
A person in Jupiter Mahadasha experiences expansion — opportunities multiply, learning accelerates, spiritual depth opens. The same person in Saturn Mahadasha faces consolidation, discipline, and karmic reckoning. Same chart. Different chapter.

The Four Goals of Life
Vedic philosophy organises all human endeavour into four Purusharthas — the four goals that together constitute a complete life. Your birth chart has a designated set of houses for each.
Dharma is your deepest why — the thread connecting your nature, your gifts, and your highest calling. When you act from Dharma, effort feels effortless. The 1st house shows your identity, the 5th your creative intelligence, the 9th your philosophy and fortune.
The planets placed in these houses and their lords reveal how your Dharmic energy flows or blocks.
Artha is purposeful earning — resources aligned with your Dharma. The 2nd house governs accumulated wealth and speech, the 6th your discipline and service, the 10th your public role and career. Without Artha, Dharma stays theoretical.
Your current Mahadasha determines whether you are in a wealth-building phase or a consolidation one.
Kama is desire held rightly — the pull toward beauty, connection, and creative expression. The 3rd house rules courage and communication, the 7th partnerships and the mirror-self, the 11th social networks and fulfilment of desires.
The condition of the 7th lord and Venus reveals the quality and timing of deep relationships.
Moksha is not escape — it is integration. The 4th house shows your inner foundations, the 8th your capacity for transformation, the 12th your dissolution of ego and access to the transcendent.
Ketu and the 12th lord are the primary Moksha significators. Strong placements here often mark spiritual seekers.

Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses the sidereal zodiac — pegged to the actual star positions — while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac aligned to the seasons. This creates a roughly 23° difference (the Ayanamsha). Vedic astrology also emphasises the rising sign (Lagna) and Moon sign over the Sun sign, and uses the Vimshottari Dasha timing system for predictions.
Yes — and this is non-negotiable for accurate results. The Lagna (rising sign) changes every 2 hours, and house positions depend on it entirely. Without exact birth time, the Dasha system can still be approximate (Moon sign is birth-time independent to a degree), but house-level interpretations will be unreliable. Collect your birth certificate or family records.
Vimshottari Dasha is a 120-year planetary timing system where each planet rules a major period (Mahadasha) of fixed length: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. Where you are in that cycle at birth depends on your birth Nakshatra. The active Mahadasha shapes the dominant themes of that life chapter.
Jyotish is an empirical system developed over 2,000 years of astronomical observation and codification in texts like Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS). AstroShri uses Swiss Ephemeris — the same ephemeris used by astronomical software — for all planetary calculations. The interpretive layer uses rule-based logic from BPHS sutras. We make no metaphysical claims; we compute configurations and apply classical rules.
Ayanamsha is the correction applied to convert tropical planetary positions to sidereal. There are several values in use; Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) is the government-adopted standard in India and the most widely used by classical Jyotish practitioners. AstroShri uses Lahiri by default to maintain consistency with BPHS-based tradition.
Jyotish shows probability corridors, not fixed outcomes. Your chart shows your innate tendencies and the types of experiences each Dasha period may activate. The same Dasha can manifest differently depending on karma, effort, and context. Think of it less as "fate" and more as a detailed map of the terrain — you still choose where to walk.
