Kalachakra Dasha is rooted in the Moon's birth nakshatra pada (quarter). Each pada maps to a specific navamsha sign, which seeds the Dasha sequence — forward or reverse depending on the nakshatra group.

Lifespan Indicator

Classical texts use Kalachakra Dasha extensively for lifespan calculation and major life transitions. The Dasha sign at death is often the 8th or 12th from the birth nakshatra's seed sign.

Forward & Reverse Cycles

Nakshatras are divided into Savya (clockwise) and Apasavya (anticlockwise) groups. The direction of the Dasha sequence — through the 12 signs — depends on which group the birth nakshatra falls in.

Variable Periods

Unlike Vimshottari's fixed planet-year assignments, Kalachakra assigns years based on the sign and its position in the cycle. Periods range from 1 to 21 years depending on the sign.

How is Kalachakra Dasha different from Vimshottari?

Vimshottari assigns fixed years to 9 planets based on Moon's nakshatra. Kalachakra assigns variable years to 12 signs based on Moon's nakshatra pada (quarter), and the sequence runs forward or backward through the zodiac depending on the nakshatra group. It is more complex but considered by classical texts to be one of the most comprehensive lifespan tools.

What is a Savya nakshatra?

Nakshatras 1–14 (Ashwini through Chitra) are Savya — their Dasha sequence moves clockwise through the zodiac. Nakshatras 15–27 (Swati through Revati) are Apasavya — their sequence moves anticlockwise. The direction determines whether the 12-sign Dasha period unfolds forward or in reverse order.

Is Kalachakra commonly used in practice?

Kalachakra Dasha is used by specialists and classical scholars primarily for lifespan analysis and major life transitions.
