Sign-Based Periods

Unlike Vimshottari (9 planets, fixed years), Chara Dasha assigns each of the 12 signs a variable period length. The ruling sign's planets and their dispositors become the active significators.

Atmakaraka Influence

The Atmakaraka's sign — and its position relative to the Dasha sign — profoundly shapes the quality of each period. Chara periods near the Atmakaraka sign often mark pivotal karmic moments.

Forward & Reverse

Odd signs count forward (Aries, Gemini, Leo…), even signs count backward (Taurus, Cancer…) through the zodiac. This alternating pattern is unique to Jaimini and creates non-obvious period sequences.

Antardasha Precision

Within each Chara Mahadasha, the 12 signs sub-rule in the same sequence — giving a 144-cell matrix of sign-within-sign periods that can time events to within months.

When do I use Chara Dasha versus Vimshottari?

Vimshottari is the standard Parashari timing system and covers most life events well. Chara Dasha is used when Vimshottari gives ambiguous timing or as a cross-check — when both systems agree on a period, the event probability is highest. Chara is particularly strong for events related to soul-level karmic themes (Atmakaraka significations).

How is Chara Dasha period length calculated?

Period length depends on the sign's longitude from its dispositor and the Atmakaraka. The formula varies by classical source — AstroShri uses the Parasara Hora Shastra formulation, which computes each sign's years as the number of signs from the dispositor (with special rules for exaltation and debilitation).

Does AstroShri compute Chara Dasha alongside Vimshottari?

Yes. Every AstroShri chart includes both Vimshottari (Parashari) and Chara Dasha (Jaimini) timelines, displayed on the same axis for easy comparison. Sub-periods (antardasha) are computed for both systems.
