Vedic Dosha · Mars (Mangal)
Mangal Dosha
Kuja Dosha
Mangal Dosha (also called Kuja Dosha or Chevvai Dosham) is formed when Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the natal chart. It is the most widely known dosha in Vedic marriage matching.
Overview
Mangal Dosha is traditionally the first dosha checked in Vivaha (marriage) compatibility. Mars is the planet of aggression, passion, and assertion. When placed in houses governing the body, wealth, home, spouse, longevity, and bed pleasures, Mars can introduce friction, conflict, or disruption into the domain of those houses — most critically into the 7th house (marriage) and 8th house (longevity of the spouse). In traditional practice, a person with Mangal Dosha is said to be a "Manglik." However, classical texts include significant cancellation rules that neutralise the dosha in a majority of charts. Modern jyotishis emphasise that the full chart context matters far more than the presence of Mars in these six positions alone.
How It Forms
Mars must be placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house of the Lagna chart (D1). Some traditions also check the same houses from the Moon chart and Venus chart — if Mars appears in these positions from any of the three reference points, the dosha is said to be partial or full.

- ✓Mars in Lagna with benefic aspect from Jupiter — cancelled
- ✓Mars in 2nd house only in certain lagnas (e.g., Gemini, Virgo) — reduced or cancelled

- ✓Mars in 7th for Cancer or Capricorn lagna — classical texts often exempt
- ✓Mars in 8th for Sagittarius lagna — traditionally cancelled
- ✓If the 7th lord is strong and well-placed, Mars's effect on the 7th house is moderated
- ✓Presence of Jupiter or Venus in Lagna — traditionally said to mitigate Kuja Dosha
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mangal Dosha really dangerous for marriage?
Classical Vedic texts treat it as one important factor among many, not a standalone verdict. The cancellation rules (Parihara) cover a large proportion of charts. A complete assessment requires evaluating the 7th house, 7th lord, Venus, Navamsha (D9), and the overall chart strength — not just Mars's position.
Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?
Traditional practice advises matching a Manglik with another Manglik (Dosha Samya) or finding a chart where the cancellation rules apply. However, many jyotishis emphasise the overall Ashtakuta score and chart compatibility over this single factor. A learned jyotishi can advise on the specific chart context.
Does Mangal Dosha reduce after age 28?
A widely held folk belief says the dosha reduces after age 28 (when Mars's natural maturity period ends in Jaimini-inspired frameworks) or after age 30. This is a popular tradition but not found uniformly in classical texts. The Parihara (cancellation) rules in the natal chart are the more authoritative basis.
What is the difference between Mangal Dosha and Angaraka Yoga?
Mangal Dosha is a positional affliction — Mars in specific houses. Angaraka Yoga is a conjunction or close association of Mars with Rahu. They are distinct conditions, though both involve Mars. Angaraka Yoga has its own effects and remedies.
